A joint venture broke ground last week on the $2.2 billion Henry Ford Health hospital expansion project in Detroit, which will create a new, state-of-the-art hospital on the same block where the 110-year-old structure first opened, according to a news release from the healthcare network.

The JV is made up of Southfield, Michigan-based Barton Malow and New York City-based Turner Construction, alongside local firm Dixon Inc., per Barton Malow. The team will add the new, 1.2 million-square-foot hospital on the south side of West Grand Boulevard, directly across the street from the legacy campus, according to Henry Ford Health. The facility will also include a 20-story hospital tower.

The project includes expanding the emergency department to 75,000 square feet, more than doubling its size, per the release. Other additions include 28 new operating rooms capable of handling complex surgical cases from transplants to brain surgery, and five floors of specialized ICU rooms, from cardiovascular to neurological.

“Our vision — to build the healthcare campus of the future, a place where people from down the street or across the globe alike can come to receive the very best care in the very best facilities — is one we’ve been cultivating for decades,” said Bob Riney, the CEO of Henry Ford Health, in the release.

Alongside medical improvements, the construction team will also a build a 185,000-square-foot shared services building, which will house the hospital’s kitchen and loading dock; a new 1,500-space parking structure; and a 46,000-square-foot central energy hub, which will heat and cool the new facilities through a hot and chilled water pump system, according to the healthcare network.

With the energy hub, the hospital claims it will eliminate its need for natural gas and help contribute to the facility becoming one of the largest fully electric-capable hospitals in the country.

The new hospital is expected to open its doors in 2029, per the release.
