On the weekend of February 2-3, 2019, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will hold an event to celebrate the grand opening of the new State Route 99 tunnel in Seattle, King5 News reports.

The tunnel will be closed on January 11 and remain closed for approximately three weeks prior to the celebration event so crews can connect on/off ramps and remove detours. Then, it will reopen the week after the celebration, depending on weather conditions, David Sowers, deputy program administrator of engineering and operations at WSDOT, told the news agency.

The celebration will feature events aimed at celebrating the waterfront’s past, present, and future, including a fun run and bike ride through the tunnel and on the Viaduct, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and a festival with 100 local artists on the Viaduct.

The tunnel and Viaduct will be open Saturday for people to walk the roadways for the first or last time.

The events will take place rain or shine, but a contingency plan is in the works for snow and ice.
