The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has been doing bridge inspections, and during the week of April 29 to May 3, it inspected along Interstate 69, ABC 12 reports.

The Michigan Bay Region has more than 1,200 bridges that need annual inspections to determine what repairs to make before bad problems develop.

“Every two years our entire bridge inventory will be inspected,” said bridge engineer Paul Schiefer, according to the news agency. “We’ll actually be tapping on the concrete, checking out the steel, and checking for section loss. Motorists should expect single and double lane closures and ramp closures.”

MDOT closed a different part of the interstate every day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to have the lowest possible impact on drivers.

“8-2 is outside of peak commute hours so its safer for drivers and the inspectors,” Scheifer said, according to the news agency.
