According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), all lanes on southbound Highway 99 near Fruitridge Road in Sacramento were closed for a while June 20, after a big rig hit a California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) paving machine and overturned, spilling its load across the southbound lanes of the highway, KCRA reports.

As the big rig was approaching a construction zone at approximately 4 a.m., it hit the paving machine working on the road. There were two Caltrans workers on the paver when it was hit, and one of the workers had to jump in the lap of the other worker to keep from getting hit and crushed.

Three people, including the two Caltrans workers, were taken to the hospital with what CHP reported as minor injuries. Traffic was diverted while the lanes were cleared.
