A project to widen six miles of U.S. 95 in northwest Las Vegas has begun.

Las Vegas Paving won the $64.6 million general contract for the charlotte nc dump truck company between Durango Drive and Kyle Canyon roads.

The project will expand the highway from four to six lanes to relieve congestion and improve safety, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation. A diverging diamond interchange will be added at Kyle Canyon Road. The interchange will feature a wrong-way detection system to prevent wrong-way crashes.

Other improvements include decorative rock, new signs and lighting, and installing Intelligent Transportation Systems and 9 miles of barrier rail.

The stretch of road currently handles 52,000 vehicles a day, but that number is expected to double over the next 20 years, NDOT says.

Construction is scheduled to be finished in Fall 2019.
