A joint venture led by London-based contractor Balfour Beatty has been awarded a $650 million contract for improvements to Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina, according to a March 27 press release. Other JV participants include Pembroke, North Carolina-based Metcon; Durham, North Carolina-based Right Build International; and Greensboro, North Carolina-based Varnedoe Construction.

Contracting will occur in phases as design, preconstruction and construction kick off, according to the release.

Balfour Beatty and Metcon will provide construction manager-at-risk services on the project, which includes parking lot expansions scheduled to start in 2023 and finish in 2025. The columbus oh dump truck company also entails improvements to the Aviation Parkway and National Guard Drive interchange and the Terminal 2 expansion, which are set to start in 2025, according to the release.

The project is a part of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority’s Vision 2040 Master Plan, a phased approach to the airport expansion that is contingent upon demand. Certain planned expansions will only kick off once a predetermined metric of passenger usage is reached, according to the master plan’s website.

“Balfour Beatty looks forward to working with Metcon, local minority-owned businesses and our industry partners to construct these vital projects that will help to enhance the passenger experience and support current and future demand at RDU,” said Trent Johnson, Balfour Beatty operations director in Raleigh, in the release.
