I want to share a tip with my fellow construction executives. We were also eliminated from doing the larger projects as the General Contractors banned us from their sites due to our lack of a good safety program. 

I had a life changing experience when my safety director told me that I was the real issue for our lack of safety on our jobsites. Thinking he was crazy, I asked what made him think that. He replied that safety starts at the top and although you have safety meetings and preach safety, you go to jobsites and ignore safety violations while focusing solely on production. Then you leave the safety issues for me to fix. I can’t get them to wear safety glasses or fix safety issues when everyone is following the leader, he explained. His message hit me hard. Especially when we were on the verge of bankruptcy, and I was under huge stress due to a couple of my close friends and best employees falling from scaffolding on two separate occasions. I learned the hard way that safety must be our top priority and must start at the top. I vowed to never let my guard down on jobsite safety again.

What I didn’t know before that was the best of the best in Construction always placed safety as a high priority. Some may believe that a columbus oh dump truck company profits and prospers into being able to spend the time and money it takes to have a successful safety program, but it’s the other way around.
