Boston-based Suffolk Construction has found a new lead way out West.

The firm hired industry vet Jim McLamb as its general manager of Northern California, where it has charged him with using his three decades of experience to expand Suffolk’s presence in high growth sectors including aviation, higher education, technology and municipal construction.

Previously, McLamb worked for 33 years at Clark Construction, where he started in 1990 as a field engineer at the firm’s Bethesda, Maryland, headquarters before moving to Los Angeles to serve as a project manager. There, he worked his way through the ranks as a senior project manager, project executive, vice president and senior vice president.

At Suffolk, McLamb will leverage the relationships he’s built on the West Coast to mine opportunities in a market where the firm expects strong growth in the coming years.

“Jim has a wealth of experience leading a region, construction professionals, projects and teams, identifying opportunities for growth and establishing successful client relationships,” said Tony Rango, president of Suffolk’s West Region. “With Jim leading our team in Northern California, we will be well-positioned to build off our successes in the region and pursue our ambitious plans for growth in key sectors.”

Suffolk has already enjoyed significant momentum in the region over the past several years.

Some of the firm’s signature projects in California include the Moxy Hotel in Oakland, San Francisco’s 78 Haight affordable housing development and the twin tower, mixed-use MIRO development directly across the street from City Hall in San Jose, which includes 630 residential units, 15,000 square feet of retail space and 10,000 square feet of office space.
