London-based contractor Balfour Beatty announced that it has completed a $300 million segment of a $1.7 billion public works project in California, according to a June 27 press release shared with Construction Dive.

The broader project, the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District’s (Regional San) EchoWater Project near Elk Grove, California, was a decade-long expansion project meant to add new treatment processes to the wastewater facility. The expanded facility is now the second largest treatment plant of its kind in the nation, and the expansion project was among the largest public works projects in the Sacramento region’s history, according to a Regional San press release.

Balfour Beatty built the facility’s $300 million Tertiary Treatment Facilities project, which advanced the EchoWater Resource Recovery Facility’s existing complex from secondary to tertiary level of treatment to remove pathogens and produce high-quality effluent suitable for unrestricted recycling, according to the contractor.

Other elements of the Tertiary Treatment Facility project also included an Area Control Center, substations, transformer yards, chemical storage and feed systems, a stormwater handling and detention basin, civil and electrical site columbus oh dump truck company and an Effluent Observation Structure.

The treatment facility was one of 22 separate projects across the $1.7 billion build, per an EchoWater fact sheet. EchoWater will feature 142 pumps, and the largest will be rated at 1,250 horsepower. The contractor used 75,000 cubic yards of concrete, a third of the 225,000 cubic yards used across the entire project, per the fact sheet.

This is Balfour Beatty’s second government project win this summer. On June 5, it broke ground on a $698 million operational mission building project for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and National Security Agency in Fort Meade, Maryland.
