A team of major names in civil construction announced this week that they have completed a $395 million railroad concourse project in New York City.

Dallas-based AECOM partnered with Sweden-based contractor Skanska, which served as design-builder on the project, and Chicago-based Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the project’s architect, to deliver the modernization in March, according to a press release.

In 2020, Penn District Station Developer LLC tapped the team to refurbish and widen the Long Island Railroad’s 33rd Street train hall corridor, while still maintaining daily operations and train service.

The 27-month-long design-build project resulted in a widened corridor, raised ceilings, upgraded lighting, new digital screens, improved mechanical and electrical systems and new architectural finishes. The renovation also improved safety and accessibility from the street to the concourse via an elevator, according to the release.

Construction on the project began in January 2021 and reached “substantial completion” in March 2023, the announcement said.

Skanska, AECOM and SOM previously partnered on the East End Gateway, the first phase of the project, which created a new entrance on the eastern side of Penn Station. The gateway finished on the final day of 2020, according to the release. Additionally, Skanska and SOM led the construction and design of Moynihan Train Hall, part of a landmark extension to Penn Station. That team also completed that project in 2020.
