Big-D taps construction law vet for chief legal officer | Dump Trucks Charlotte NC

Salt Lake City-based Big-D Cos. has promoted Melissa Beutler Withy, previously the firm’s general counsel, to its chief legal officer, according to a news release shared with Construction Dive.

In her new role, she’ll oversee the legal aspects of the company’s business, providing strategic guidance on legal matters and leading its efforts to minimize risk across all sectors of the company, according to the release. She will also continue to serve on the board of directors.

Beutler Withy is a construction attorney who specializes in complex commercial and industrial projects, including green building, LEED and renewable projects, according to her LinkedIn profile. 

She’s also written and edited two books published by the American Bar Association on construction law and has served as an expert witness in state and federal courts on construction project delivery methods and industry-standard contracting practices. Previously, she served as chairman of the ConsensusDocs Council for the Arlington, Virginia-based publisher of more than 110 standardized construction contracts. 

"Melissa is an exceptionally intelligent and talented individual who has become an indispensable part of our organization,” said Cory Moore, CEO of Big-D Cos., in the release. “Her profound influence has significantly fueled our growth and success. Her strategic emphasis on risk management serves as a foundational pillar within our company."

Including its Salt Lake City headquarters, Big-D has 17 offices in nine states from Minnesota to California. Its other affiliates include:

  • Martin Harris in Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada.
  • Dovetail in Bozeman, Montana.
  • McAlvain Cos. in Boise, Idaho.
  • CFC Construction in Golden, Colorado.

Before joining Big-D in 2015, Beutler Withy was a partner at law firm Holland & Hart, where she represented Big-D in private practice, according to the release.
